The essays in this collection explore the ways in which material culture changed as religion in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century England and Wales strengthened. The growth of the use of minority languages (Welsh, Irish, Cornish and Manx) in Anglicanism was supported by significant innovations in print culture. Three essays explore the importance of communion silver and other materials used in celebrations of the eucharist in Anglican and Nonconformist churches. They suggest that celebration of holy communion in Wales was remarkably popular and widespread, and that people spent considerable amounts on the cups, patens and other vessels used for the services. Confirmation also witnessed the growth of materials and resources to support the continuing importance of the affirmation of mature faith in the Church of England. Collectively, these essays depict a vibrant and energetic religious culture in Anglicanism and Wales between 1660 and 1900.
