Roedd Syr William Reardon Smith (1856-1935) yn un o ffigyrau blaenllaw yn ne Cymru ar ddechrau'r ugeinfed ganrif. Roedd yn enghraifft o ddyn a weithiodd ei ffordd o dlodi i gyfoeth - dechreuodd ar ei yrfa fel cogydd a chynorthwyydd, cyn gwneud ei ffortiwn yn y diwydiant llongau pan oedd masnachu glo ar ei anterth yng Nghymru.
